I find it interesting that multiple science fiction stories have used Asteroids and comets as weapons against earth. I guess there's something to be said about just dropping huge rocks and watching the explosions.
As others have said, it's the final form of 'throw a rock at the problem' an old favourite strategy of our own. Personally, I like the dread aspect of it epitomizing the phrase 'there's no problem so bad it can't get worse'. As you likely know meteor's have caused at least one mass extinction as far as we figure it, whose to say they couldn't also carry one?
